Chronic Pain & Injuries

Chronic pain and injury signifies the type of physical injury, health problem, or disease that occurs little by little and is persistent and long-lasting, or constantly occurring over time.

Many chronic injuries have mild indications and low-grade pain, can be often dismissed or simply overlooked for many months and sometimes even years.

Overlooking such modest pains and aches can lead into a prolonged chronic injury that is often challenging to treat.

Cumulative Injuries and Overexertion Injuries

Chronic injuries are sometimes considered cumulative trauma or overexertion injuries.

Overuse injuries often have subtle or indistinct symptoms that form slowly.

They begin as a small, nagging ache or pain, and can evolve into a debilitating injury if they are not treated early.

Overexertion injuries are the result of repeated use, strain and damage to the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, bones and joints) without an appropriate time for recovery.

Theses are occasionally called cumulative injuries, or repetitive stress traumas.

Chronic Injury: Injuries that are developed over time

Chronic injuries are typically cumulative injuries, often the result of repetitive actions, movements or stresses.

Examples of chronic injuries include:

  • Stress fractures
  • Tendonitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Wrist tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Shin splints

Chronic Pain: Pain that doesn’t go away

Chronic pain can be defined as pain that does not go away. Typically if pain lasts longer than three months it is considered  chronic pain. Chronic pain differs from what is called acute pain – acute pain is the sensation that makes us aware we may have been injured. Chronic pain differs from acute pain in that the pain persists – for months, years or even longer.

Examples of chronic pain include:

  • Low back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Headache
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Shingles
  • Nerve damage (neuropathy)
  • Lower leg pain
  • Ankle Pain
  • Knee and thigh pain
